Why it is so hard to lose weight

That is the title of an Alternet article by one of my favorite bloggers, Greta Christina. It reminded me of how I explain the difficulty of losing weight to those fortunate few who don't understand.

Have you ever smoked? Did you smoke for a number of years, then quit? If not, run this past one of your friends who did. Imagine cutting down... but never completely quitting. You're not allowed to cold turkey. You have to smoke five cigarettes a day: morning, noon, and night, with two unscheduled "snack" smokes. Never less- five smokes. But never more, either; if you cheat, have too many, you can't make up for it by skipping one the next day- it's not that easy. No, for every one you cheat with, you have to spend a week smoking the same five smokes, but half length cigarettes- just a couple puffs, not enough for satisfaction, then put it out. No matter how much you want one more toke, put it out, try to hold out 'til the next smoke... which will also be too short, until you've worked off that extra one you had.

If you're not a former smoker, ask one- there are tens of millions of us; statistically, I know you know one. Could you do it? Spend the rest of your life smoking five cigarettes a day, never more, never less?

That's what it's like losing weight.

Tips for weight loss
Do not pop any pills.
Only excersize (like walking / running) is not enough.
Use simple tips like below for loosing weight.

Fill up on fiber.

You can curb your hunger by increasing your intake of dietary fiber, which is filling, so you feel full but eat less. For these diet tips, experts recommend eating more fruits, vegetables and wholegrain cereals.

THE SECRET IS TO DRINK LOTS OF WATER

Drinking a volume of water will increase your metabolism and this is what you want to take place if you want to lose weight. So, realistically, if you drink about a gallon of H20 per day, you can rid yourself of ten pounds in a week. If you speed up your metabolism, it stands to reason that you’re going to start burning calories and resultantly lose weight.

Interesting that the author did not mention removing all subsidies but only switching them. This could be part of an article entitled, Why is it hard for the federal government to lose weight?

Have you looked into low-carb/paleolithic diets? I've struggled for years with my weight, loosing it and then gaining it back again. Recently I've been reading a lot about low-carb/paleolithic diets, and am going to give it a whirl. It seems that grains and sugar are the two worst things you can be eating. I just ordered Gary Taubes new book Why We Get Fat And What To Do About It (read an excerpt at Google books; http://tinyurl.com/4ccjsdo ). I also have been reading some blogs, my favorites being Richard Nikoley's http://freetheanimal.com/ and Tom Naughton's http://fathead-movie.com/ I loved the video Fat Head, which was an answer to Morgan Spurlock's Supersize Me. The vegetarians hate this diet, but I say that you've got to do what works for you, and other diets haven't worked for me. (I hope I'm not sounding like a spam bot! I'm real, really!)

To Anonymous, who said "Drinking a volume of water will increase your metabolism and this is what you want to take place if you want to lose weight. It sounds very unhealthy to lose 10 pounds in one week, not to mention how hard it would be to drink a gallon of water a day. Typically we are told to drink 8 glasses daily (which some believe to be a myth, anyway. But for the sake of argument...). Assuming an 8 ounce serving, that's 64 ounces which is 0.5 gallons. I would be floating if I drank a gallon a day. Nope, no water intoxication for me!
